Hieronymus Waal, a citizen of Nuremberg. Before casting a medal, German medallists sometimes carved a model of it from wood or stone. Due to their uniqueness these works are highly valued. The memento mori motif, a reminder that life is but transitory, is often found in German art of the 16th century.
